Room 01

What is AI, really?

Two quick activities. By the end of them, you'll know more about how AI actually works than most grown-ups do.

Exhibit 01

Pick the next word. Be the AI.

AI is basically a really fast machine that guesses what word comes next. Want to see? Let's try it. Here's the start of a sentence — pick what word you think comes next. Bigger bubbles mean the word is more likely.

Which word comes next?

What just happened
You just did what AI does.

Every word was YOU picking the most likely next one. That's it. That's what AI does — but it's read so much more than you could ever read, so it can do it really fast and make it sound smart. But it's still just guessing. Sometimes it guesses brilliantly. Sometimes it guesses weirdly. It can't always tell which.

Exhibit 02

Robot brain vs. your brain.

We'll ask the same question to both. Sometimes the robot wins. Sometimes YOU win. Both matter — they're just good at different things.

What we learned
AI is great at patterns. You're great at knowing YOU.

The robot was fast at math. It made up an answer that SOUNDED right about pizza. It got tripped up by a trick question you caught. The big idea: use AI for the things patterns do well — explain something, draft an email, summarize a book. Keep your own brain for the things that are actually about YOU, or that need real thinking.

End of Room 01

Nice work. You just learned what AI really is.

AI is a very fast guess-the-next-word machine. It can be brilliant and it can be confidently wrong — and you can learn to tell when. Four more rooms to go.
